What is a Moda Scrap Bag?
When Moda is producing their layer cakes, those 10inch square bundles cut out of the full width of the small 44inch bolts, there is a slim strip left over on the selvedge side. In the olden days, this strip was disgarded until it was figured that that width, min 2inches up to 3.5inches, would be really popular for scrappy quilts, jelly roll quilt patterns etc – at a fraction of the price! Originally they mixed different series but meantime you do get to 99% co ordinating fabric strips of the same series.
Just that they are not cut horizontal across the width of the fabric, but vertical, along the selvedge. Some bags contain quite a bit of selvedge, then you get lots and lots without any selvedge. Always keep those selvedge strips aside, they are gold dust as they are very popular for bookshelf quilts (for the backs of the books), and for all sorts of modern quilts that require writings as part of the pattern. You might even want to trade some written selvedge with your quilting friends!
Each strip is around 30inches long and each bag has a min weight of 1/2lb / 8 oz.
So you do not have to buy the “cat in the bag” we have veery carefully opened the scrap bags and taken photograph of the series that was hiding inside to be able to show you some pictures. Not all fabrics of each series will be in the bag, especially if the series contains lots of different patterns, but most of them will be there. No bag is exactly the same to the next. Within a series, if there are lots of different colourways, not all bags contain the same colour ways but all patterns will be from the same series, if that makes sense.
