Discover the art of accurate Roman Blind Making, some of it machine stitched, most of it hand stitched. Thimbles at the ready!
Join us for our Roman Blind Making Class within the “Sew Sunday Full Day Sewing Class Program”!
The whatsapp chat for this class will be set up as soon as the class is declared fully booked, so that we can discuss any questions in the group before the first day we meet not to loose any time or to miss out on any significant measurements….
Please make sure you measure your WINDOW you want to make the blind for carefully: If the blind is meant to be INSIDE The window (in the recess) you measure the width of the recess on the top of the opening, in the middle and on the bottom, looking out for any tiling halfway up the window, any bows in the plasterwork, to make sure the final blind is not too slim but also not to wide for any “sticky-outy” bits on the way.
If the blind is to go OUTSIDE the recess, then I propose to start measuring around 13cm above the window as pushing the blind up a bit gives the illusion of the ceiling to be higher up, also then the blind does not “steal” much daylight when it is up as then the bulk of it will actually be above the window. For the width of the blind outside the recess, it should be at least the width of the window sill, if it is a bedroom blind I would say it should be at least 10cm over the window opening either side to reduce light bleed. The width of curtaining fabric is usually about 137cm, minus hems either side makes a usable width of max 130cm. THIS CLASS IS FOR A SINGLE WIDTH BLIND OF MAX 130CM, WE WILL NOT HAVE THE SPACE TO MAKE AN EXTRA WIDE EXTENDED BLIND, thanks very much for your understanding. The drop however can be as long as you wish.
Please provide suitable face fabric of curtaining weight, not too thin as you will struggle making a nice blind with it then. You will need the visible drop plus 20cm but not less (better 30cm). You are very welcome to purchase the lining and interlining material and everything else needed for your blind on the days of the class, also the chain operated header system that I gladly cut to size for you.
Please let us know if we can assist with tips for measuring your window and choosing the right kind of fabric for your blind. Should you have all or most components for a blind in the house from a previous attempt do bring it all and we see what can be used for your blind.
This class is taught over two days: Full Day Sunday 9am to 5pm on the 28.09.2025 and half day Saturday, to complete the blinds and attach them to the blind systems, on 04.10.2025, the fee for the class excl. any blind sundries is £130.00 per person.
Bring your lunch or nip out to Tesco round the corner, the kettle is on and the biscuit tin is open to reward you for all the thinking, calculating, measuring….:-)
Bring your sewing machine or use a Sewing School one, bring your sewing kit with ivory thread, needles, sharp pins, tape measure, rulers, hand sewing needles, flat nose pliers, scissors etc.
